January 17th 2016 will mark 25 years since the US-led Coalition began airstrikes in a prelude to boots on the ground to force the withdrawal of Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi forces from Kuwait. To mark the 25th Anniversary, we will be commencing a Kiwimodeller Group Build, beginning January 17th 2016, and finishing on the 15th of July 2016.
The build is open to any scale and any subject that played a role in Operation Desert Storm. This includes Iraqi forces. The model must be built in its entirety within the specified build dates and the build should be accompanied by a thread in the group build forum documenting regular progress. Post shots of your sprues at the beginning of your thread.
By the end of the GB (and no later than 24 hours after the completion date) participants should post five pictures of the completed build in the GB completed builds thread. There is no entry fee for the GB, but a donation for the upkeep of Kiwimodeller is welcome The winner of the group build will be decided by popular vote.
Voting will run for the week following the 15th of July, ending Midday the 22nd of July. A deadlock will be decided by a separate run-off vote.
Can't believe it's been so long since my last update. Just to show that Calum isn't the only one plugging away at this classic piece of Brit engineering (I'd have said Anglo-Saxon, but with Brexit and all that, have to be PC now).
Almost ready for me to start on some paint. I stripped the main gear legs and have been correcting and detailing them. Little way to go yet. Most of the PP Aeroparts/Flightpath parts have been added. Apologies for the poor quality pics. Late at night and my lighting/photography area is currently too cluttered to use. You get the idea at least.
As this is the attempt to clear the Shelf of Doom year for me, some older projects will be back on the bench and the Jag is one of them. Got the cockpit assembled and managed to shoe horn it (with surgery) into the kit, so progress is being made.
Also got the Brassin CBU-87s assembled. These are absolute gems.
In a fit of madness, I've hacked the wings, so I can drop all the control surfaces on the wings as seems common for most parked Jags. Using a set of wings from a second Jag kit I'll no longer be building to provide the necessary donor pieces. Managed to get a bit carried away on the starboard aileron and so had to do some repair work (hence the white styrene section).
I've also fitted the Pavla resin underwing pylons, and moved the two inboard pylons further outboard. Hasegawa have the locations too far inboard. The pylons should line up with the overwing rails.
Bit more work done on this. Control surfaces nearly finished, 3D printed Sidewinder overwing rails added, working on all of the smaller missing details on the underside, repositioned the upper radio antenna and finished cleaning up and attached the drop tank, chaff pod and ECM pod.
