Last year my wife and I went to Japan and fell in love with the place, especially the railways. So, time for a new layout. I have the trains and track (bought in Japan and Hong Kong recently) and today I picked up the timber. I'm intending to raise my personal bar with this layout and produce something decent. Bonus star Wars kit included.

This has been occupying me all this week. The frame work is mostly done apart from the lighting (LED bar lights) and backscene. And it fits out of the door (which I was sort of worried about)!

Wow, that's very nice cabinet making. This must be an N gauge railway.

Cheers, my carpentry is slowly improving. (Sort of related, lately I've been thinking about guitar making as another hobby.)

Yeah, this is N scale. I'll post post some pics of the trains soon. They are very nicely detailed.

Did some practical stuff, but I've also been playing with the track arrangement and how it will fit into the environment.

I've been working on some Japanese passager cars at Mainline Steam in Christchurch you wouldn't believe how disgusting under the tables are with gum.

Thanks Henry

Thanks Henry, very helpful. :P

Backscene time. I'm painting this in oils but will do a few more practice paintings before I commit. The hill shapes need changing and I need to work on the colours (ignore the dirty cloud in particular). I'm not much of a painter but think I can make this work. It is really just to give the scene a bit of depth. It shouldn't be too detailed/busy because this draws attention from the modelling.

Sky and mountains blocked in. This will have to dry for the next few days before I return to it and tidy it up. I'm easonably happy with it.

Back drop painting looks fantastic, almost Peter McIntyre-ish in style.

Probably a bit of Grahame Sydney too. This was a lot of fun.

I have been working on this background for the last week and a half, probably repainting it four or five times to make it a little more refined. Here is the final version. This will get a matte varnish in the next few days. You are meant to wait an age to varnish oils but this is touch dry and I need to move on with the build.

With the bare base board showing it looks like the salt flats around Area 51 in ID4. Looks great!

What will the cutouts at the front be for Grant? Water?

They will be sea walls/rocks. I've decided to cut them back a bit further so that maybe I can include a bit of the sea lapping against the rocks.

Incidentally, my wife and I are heading to Osaka tomorrow night to spend New Years in Kyoto. Much excite. :woohoo:

Some more progress. I had a go at arranging the various buildings. I've decided not to use the large abandoned warehouse on this layout because its size overwhelms everything else. That side of the layout will be less built up. I also finished laying the tracks. It's all glued down and will be soldered. I will also spend a bit of time tidying it up, filling gaps and the little track locating holes etc. Then it will get a paint. Finally I pushed some trains though by hand for a rough test of everything. I will wire it up and test properly next week. And then the fun part... scenery!

Track wired, soldered and given a grimy undercoat. Next up I'll mask the track and then begin the messy scenery.

I've been putting in the hours on this. Hopefully you can see what I'm doing from the pictures without any commentary. It's almost ready for some plaster. On the computer are videos from our trip to Japan in 2017 for reference. :)
