Having had very little time for modeling, and being an exhausted new father (thank god I only have one rugrat) I, of course, decide to break the break the drought with a simple little kit. The Zvezda Star Destroyer. I'm only partially joking about the simple part. There's not too much to the build as it will be straight OOB, no lighting, no shapeways parts. I just want a straightforward build, and then get on to painting, although I have no idea how I will paint this behemoth as it's way too big for my spray booth.

The parts are big and really nicely detailed, but there's not so many of them. Building should be fairly simple.

The main hull comes in 2 sections per upper and lower surface and I know I will have to deal with seam lines.

First stages call for adding side details to the upper fuselage. This also is going to let me plan for painting although the detail level should allow for natural shadows to show.

The temptation to add extras that are 3 times the price of kit is there but good on ya for going OOB, will let those of us with it waving at us from the stash how good the kit is in its purest form.

Big is easy, just wear a gas mask. Great size. Not 1:16 of course, but still a great size.

Cheers for the encouragement all. I'm not too sure if a 1:16 star destroyer would work since it would be 100 meters long. Even you don't have a cabinet that big ;)
I agree Webby. While it was really tempting to get the LED kit, in my case it would go on twice and not be worth the time or money.

The detail parts are really nice. Take your time to dry fit and check alignment or you will really forcing parts together, and clamping these angles can be quite difficult.

The panel lines are really nice too although there are some areas where they are noticably shallower and I may look at scribing these areas a little. I'm not too sure.

I was also careful with alignment issues causes by ejection marks. This would be more critical if you have internal lighting as you could have light bleeding out of areas you dont want.

The end results are great but also check the places where parts join for gaps. This is not an area I would want to try to fill.

A little bit more done tonight. Im really loving the detail. A good modeller would be able to do so much with this kit, and I can see both the value, and the huge work that lights would entail.

I've decided to leave the gun turrets off. I might look at a metalic for these. Artistic licence, I know, but something tells me they need to look used.

Where the side detail joins the fuselage need some attention when placing surfaces on top of the join to ensure a good fit.

But its worth it when things start coming together

We're at the stage where the hull starts getting put together. I test fitted attaching the front and rear hull halves, but I am not sure if I will do this, or join the upper and lower rear hull sections, and then add the front. or if I will connect the top halves and then mate to the bottom. I'm open to advice on this. Whatever I do, I get a proper feel for the size of this sucker. It's huge. This is an A1 size cutting mat.

And in preparation, I assembled the stand for this to sit on during the build. I'm probably going to look at a 3rd party stand for the finished model

Nice progress mate! I can see this is one of those kits you could quite happily get lost in! Interested to see how you tackle the joining of the hull pieces! I havnt looked at aftermarket stands yet.. Have you?

Cheers Nos. When searching for references I came across this website. displaystandsdirect.com/zvezda-star-destroyer/

I may look at 3D Printing my own. I'm not sure yet but I think. I would rather have a single connected base.

Another small update. I started adding the side details on the lower hull section with the goal of test fitting the upper surface.

I did the same for the front part once I figured there were no overlapping pieces I needed to worry about.

And with that done I was able to test fit the upper and lower sections, and see if I could then mate the front to the rear. I can, but either way I do it im going to have to be really careful to get a good join and minimise any seems along the joins.

Last bit of building before bed. I assembled the lower hull in one piece. I probably could have gotten a better join, but I was scared of sanding too much.

As it turned out, the seam isn't too bad and wont require much filler.

So I went ahead and assembled the top half. Will leave them overnight before mating them.

To keep the build progressing I moved on to the bridge.

Once again really nice detail and to assist strength and stability, there is internal bracing included.

I also built the communication tower (front) but I will leave both this and she shield deflectors (round domes) off and paint them separately. This should reduce the chance of missing areas to paint.

Cheers guys. A bit of a bigger update today. Did some filling a few days ago and have let it dry, but today I did another hour or so at the bench.

It's just the bottom hull that has a seam line I need to fix, so I taped it off to minimize cleanup.

I really only have 2 puttys, this and Mr Plastic Perfect Putty, and they are really similar but the Vallejo ones nozzel made it easer in this case.

And I use a plastic scraper to both push the putty into the seam and flatten it as much as I can. I always overdo it though and have more to clean up than I wanted to.

After a few hours I tried something I had recently seen on YouTube and with a wet cotton bud, tried to wipe away any excess. This I hoped would reduce the need to sand.

But I left it too long obviously and so while it doesn look a lot, there was a ton of clean up I needed to do. Pull out the sanders.

Progress is slow as I try to retain details, and I had to use an optivisor to see the detail. A bunch of filler had to be picked out of the detail with a sharp knife, and I will have to rescribe once all this is done.

In between the sanding, to keep my sanity, I worked on some other parts. You need to add the central engine mount to the rear.

The locator tabs make it pretty foolproof.

The main engine bells have a rin you need to add. I did this now as I will be painting them separately. The ring tapers slightly, but once again, the fit is so nice, there's a satisfying click when you mount them correctly.

Then came the deflector shields. You have to be careful cutting off the sprue gates as there are tabs that are supposed to be there.

I know the 3D printed parts are better but really this will look fine to me once done.

Pushing on to try and get the build phase done before I go back to work on Monday. I added the bottom dome which is supposed to be a Solar Ionization Reactor. The fit was nice but there were some tiny gaps, and just so they couldn't be seen, I puttied the interior edges.

Fit looks good from the proper side though

I also put together the tiny grapelling hook that sits in the hangar bay, but I'll be painting that separately too. Too easy to knock, so I'm bound to.

Then came time to start mating the 2 halves. I needed to attach the rear engine area first, and that starts with a supporting brace.

I glued the centre then glued one side. and held it together with a clam and peg. I was starting to rush here a little, one of my common mistakes.

I noticed the bad fit after one side had dried and the centre was popping up. I should have test fitted but I trusted an earlier play around. I think it's something I will try to fix as much as I can but I'll have to live with it not 100%.

Cheers Richard

I got a little more done this morning as I continued to join the halves, starting with the rear engine section, this time fitting the upper half. It fit much better. I left it to dry and worked on sanding and prepping other parts.

Then I glued the sides together. I would have hated to have to do this with the old 70s style Humbrol glue ;)

There's really nice bracing inside that makes an essentially hollow kit feel really solid.

Then I started adding more side detail before I got called up to help wifey. Hoping I will complete the build today.

Thanks G1 and Webby.

Back to the bench after the girl went down, and I started on the tower. The fit was perfect.

No mistaking it now. I thought I was done and all sprues were empty, then I realised I hadn't added the cannons.

I had thought about painting them with a dark iron, but they are really small, but would look too out of place.

Both sides done and shes ready to prep for paint.

Having not really built much for maybe 6 months or more, I cleaned out an airbrush I use for primers and shook the hell out of a Bottle of Stynylrez Black. It's my favorite primer but I know of problems others have had. Not this bottle though and I was able to spray the seams, and the rear area so I would get a good idea of where to concentrate the prep work.

Tomorrow will just be cleaning up the bench and giving my airbrushes a good clean out.

A bit cooler tonight so I started painting the primer. I started with the small parts

I was going to use grey primer, and then pre-shade. but I just started with black, and will see how the painting goes. It's going to take a while.

Not to try and derail this awesome thread, but in my honest opinion, after using both for a long while now im not certain they are the same thing.
They seem to spray slightly differently and dry differently in my experience.
I know everyone says they are the same, but i have yet to see a proper side by side comparison and think the fact UMP primer is literally just a different label has led people to believe one shot is just in a different, and honestly, awful bottle (well the cap is anyway)
I would not be surprised if they cam out of the same factory, but i feel the One Shot is just a little bit different, maybe its a little more thinner or something as it does seem to mix quicker in the bottle, or different batches but there is a slight difference in my experience.

Either way its a pity they don't do it in 4 litre tins for subjects like this :-)
