The Armistice Challenge was created by Craig Sargent
Ian has issued a challenge to me for us to build the same kit(s) and enter them in the same category(s) at Armistice next year. In his words, paraphrased, “you and I need to get more competitive” :D

This is a formal record of the “thrown down gauntlet”.

To make this more interesting, I’m thinking we should have some guidelines and penalties, I mean “incentives”.

So, Ian, I think we should do the following:
  • come up with about a half-dozen subject choices we can agree on
  • put it to membership vote
  • set some penalties for non-completion to make it interesting
  • and then let any other members join, sort of a pseudo-GB

“How say you savage?” :p

Half - a- dozen.... seems a bit too many.
Nope - Just between us, keep it simple.
Nope - not interested in dis-incentives, our 'friendly rivalry' is all the incentive I need.
Love that idea - somewhere between a GB and a buddy-build - all for it, more the merrier, etc, etc.

So I had some ideas on the drive back home. We both have similar 'tastes' in aircraft, so maybe...

1 Any Mirage variant in 1:48 (?) - Has to be a 'fresh start' build nothing that we've started already.
2 Any Phantom variant in 1:72 (?) - again a 'fresh start' build.
3 Any WWII Italian, French or Japanese aircraft in any scale - let's be honest, models of British, US and German aircraft are very common, so why not the less-seen nations (?)

Hmmmm. Ok.

1. I’m not sure I have one unstarted. Would need to check the stash. Already have 5 so no intent to buy another, unless I can track down a Wingman Nesher.
2. I do have an IDF F-4E unstarted in 1/72, but have plenty of 1/48 F-4Js - Academy, Hasegawa and ZM all unstarted
3. Nothing in that category. Don’t have a huge interest in WW2.

Some other thoughts

OOB, or anything goes?

Same scale and class obviously. Is intent to build same kit/family i.e. Hasegawa F-16s have many subvariants but same base kit; or just same subject, i.e. any 1/48 F-16?

Most obvious is Hasegawa 1/48 Harriers, but perhaps a little cliche

1:48 Phantom is definitely do-able....

F-16 would have been a good option too, but recently finished two-in-a-row so probably not.

I'd be up for a Harrier build, but - as you say - between as we have 'presented' a fair few in recent years.

As for detailing & extras.... why not ?. I have an RAF Phantom and a couple of Navy ones, don't think the manufacturer is relevant, it's the side-by-side progress and finish that's the attraction, right ?

So options are (subject to check of the stash), in order of pref:

1/48 Phantom
1/72 Phantom
1/48 Harrier ( you can never have too many)

Now until Armistice 2020 to finish
Kit unstarted
Anything goes (OOB, aftermarket, scratch)

Yep that sums-it-up, Craig.

I already know I have all the 'raw materials' in the stash so I'm good-to-go. If we are doing a Phantom build, I already have an F-4J scheme in mind, I'm open minded about the other two - guess it would be better if we do different squadrons !!

That was easy then. 1/48 F-4Js it is.

Checked the stash and I have one of each flavour - Hasegawa, Academy (Eduard) and Zoukei Moura, in a virgin state.

Markings are easy for me as all have different VMFA-451 schemes allocated and scheme to use depends on which kit.

Academy/Eduard scheme is what’s in the box.

Other two are covered on the Impact decals sheet which I helped Kevin with the research. Hasegawa is middle scheme with mace on the tail and ZM is top scheme with VM codes

Does this work in with your Phantom plans Ian?

Just pulled the kits to double check and Hasegawa kit is out of contention as it has already had the DMold seamless intakes glued to each fuselage half, so will be Academy/Eduard or ZM for me.

Yep I'll match that: Not sure what's in the box, pretty sure there's some seats, 'correct' missiles and maybe some Aires pipes. I do know that the decals are in there...for this machine:

Need to finish one build before starting properly; the NASCAR racer that I brought to Cambridge. Once that's done I'll clear the bench and simply go-for-it. No reason why we can't use this thread to post our progress.

Ok. It’s on. Thread title changed accordingly. I have some other stuff to work through so won’t be clearing the bench, but will work on it off and on for the next year. No speed build here.

I think I’ll go with the Academy kit as it has pretty much everything I need for this build.

I’ll post an “in the box” pic soon and then I can work on it at my leisure. Happy to post everything in this thread if that’s what works best.

The Eduard boxing of the Academy kit has resin seats, exhausts and wheels, as well as coloured photo-etch for the cockpit, so I think I'm mostly set for aftermarket for this build. I may throw in some Master Models brass pitot tubes.

I'll need to work out stores load too and see what I need.

Still working on which Warlords scheme to build, but leaning towards the one in the kit still.

Here we go. Get the formalities out of the way and then I can work on this at leisure.

Eduard pic of the box top.

Plastic in the box, minus parts not being used which I have removed this morning, with phone for date. The box under the phone contains the Eduard Brassin seats, wheels and exhausts.

The unused parts in the box lid. Plenty of additions to the spares box.

The instructions, Brassin parts, Fine Molds brass pitots, Furball and Eduard photoetch.
